Frame of Charles III
Ca. 1770. Carved, Water gilding, Joined / assembled.Room 039
This “Mengs frame” in the Neoclassical style was designed by Anton Raphael Mengs, who used it for paintings he produced in Spain during the second half of the 18th century, including several portraits for the court of Charles III, now in the Museo del Prado. The highest-quality frame, in technical terms, is that of Mengs’ Adoration of the Shepherds; it is known to have been produced in Spain by Jorge Balze.
