Frame of Emperor Charles V at Mühlberg
Ca. 1924. Water gilding, Joined / assembled, Estofado / incised gilding, Carved.Room 027
During refurbishment of the Prado in the early 20th century, several major works were fitted with new frames. Thanks to a sponsorship programme, the Cano company was commissioned to provide numerous historicist frames. In around 1924, when Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie visited the new Titian rooms, the king decided to heighten their splendour by donating this frame for the equestrian portrait of Charles V.
