The Marquina framing company was among the most active suppliers of frames to the Museo del Prado in the late 19th century. By extension, its name was given to this model. The makers favoured Baroque historicist designs, recognisable by their reverse profile and powerful plant motifs in plaster. Many were made for the exhibition organised by the Prado in 1899 to mark the third centenary of Velázquez’s birth.
