Girl with a Doll
Ca. 1890. Oil on canvas. Not on display
A front view of a girl with a tambourine in her left hand. She holds a doll with her right arm. In keeping with his interest in children´s portraits, Pinazo captures a very familiar atmosphere here, making a very intimate portrait. The color scheme tends toward greys and blues, avoiding the brownish tones so frequent in many of his child portraits. This work is notable for various aspects that denote a clear modernity, such as the raised viewpoint, which is related to modern French painting, or the almost photographic framing. The spontaneous rendering and evanescent quality of certain elements, such as her clothing, make this one of the artist´s finest portraits. It was acquired for the Museum of Modern Art in 1930.
