Hercoldo
1777. Red chalk, White chalk on dark toned paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing for the main figure in the fresco The Apparition that the Devout Hercoldo had in a Dream. It is located in the Cloister of Toledo Cathedral and was painted in 1777. Two preparatory sketches for the fresco are extant: one in Toledo Cathedral and the other in the Ena Collection in Zaragoza. It depicts a male figure lying on a bed. The study of the cloth and the bed is very thorough, whereas the figure’s upper body is barely sketched. The Museo del Prado holds the preparatory drawing of the head for this figure (D000489).
