Lionesses and Lions
After 1870. Oil on canvas.Room 062B
From 1870, the year of the outbreak of the Franco Prussian war, Rosa Bonheur revealed a marked interest in lions, seeing an admirable nobility in their ferocious nature. These fifteen life studies, which demonstrate the artist’s ability to capture her subjects in a spontaneous manner and with striking economy of means, focus on their typical postures and on various anatomical details.
