Low tide (Guéthary)
Ca. 1881. Oil on canvas attached to canvas. Not on display
In the foreground, several strata of rocks protruding from the sand can be seen. Above the water, and in the middle of the breaking waves, more rocks are visible. In the distance, the sea and the skyline can be seen, whereas the coastal outline on the right can be traced. In the drawing (D005205), part of the same donation, Haes takes up the motif of these same rocks, although slightly changing the point of view. Jaime Morera also depicts this same motif in his work Guetary Beach (Study), located in Museo Jaime Morera in Lérida. It is to be assumed that, in their long days of living and working together, both painters, who were master and pupil, set themselves the task of capturing the same suggested theme, sometimes as an exercise or even as a professional and friendly challenge between them.
