This work presents a social subject, which formed part of the painter´s favourite thematic repertoire. In the painting, a man can be seen reading something to others who are probably unable to read. A group of male figures are grouped around a small lamp on a table, which is the only point of light in the entire composition. The scene takes place in an interior which is practically dark; only a reddish flame illuminates the faces of two figures on the left, facing the viewer. One of them is seated, reading a letter on the table, and the other is behind him, standing, attentive to the reading, as are the three figures on the right, who receive only a very slanted light.
