Ca. 1700. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
This painting, together with The Annunciation (P004086), Episode from the life of Saint John of Matha (?) (P004087), Religious Scene (P006585), Religious Scene - Saint Peter putting the biretta on a saint (P006586) and Religious Scene (P006587) were previously located in the Church La Trinidad, where they were placed in a space known as ‘the half-dome’. The work appears in the Inventory of New Acquisitions under the number 361 and a note in the left-hand margin indicates that these paintings were added when the inventory was rectified at the time of the merger of the two museums on 22 May 1872. The piece is again listed in the Inventory of New Acquisitions under number 1291. This set of paintings did not enter Museo del Prado at the time of the merger with Museo de la Trinidad in 1872. In 1899, the Director General of Public Instruction sent an official letter to the Director of Museo del Prado informing him of the need to move these works, which were located in the anteroom of the Ministry of Public Works and in the payment-authorising offices. Shortly afterwards, Salvador Martínez Cubells stated, in another official letter to the Director of Museo del Prado, the difficulty involved in moving the works. In the end, the set of paintings in La Trinidad was transferred to the museum by Royal Decree of 29 October 1900, as noted in the Inventory of New Acquisitions.
