Path in the Forest (Asturias)
Ca. 1874. Oil on paper attached to canvas. Not on display
A steep path opening up in the mountains, bordered by trees, bushes and branches is depicted with a strong contrast of light and shade. The presence of the dry trunk, probably of a pine tree, is particularly significant. Its bare roots and part of its branches are illuminated by the sun and forms the centre of the composition. The tops of the trees have large patches of dark colour tone. In the background of the painting, with spirited brushstrokes, the form of a mountain is silhouetted against the light of the sky.
