Pedro de Alcántara Téllez-Girón y Pacheco, 9th Duke of Osuna

Ca. 1805. . Room 062

Pedro de Alcántara Téllez-Girón, 9th Duke of Osuna, was born in Madrid on August 8, 1755, son of Pedro Zoilo Téllez-Girón and Pérez de Guzmán, 8th Duke of Osuna (1728-1787), and María Vicenta Pacheco Téllez -Giron (h. 1725- ¿?). He married in the Madrid parish of San Pedro el Real, on December 29, 1771, with María Josefa Pimentel Téllez-Girón (1750-1834), the only heir to the Counts of Benavente. He intervened in his youth in the war against England and was assigned in 1799 as ambassador to Vienna, a position that he did not carry out as neither he nor his family could move to Austria. A man concerned about scientific progress, he was interested in letters and art, he was president of the Madrid Economic Society and a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy. His residence in La Alameda, better known as El Capricho, was an important meeting place for intellectuals and artists. He died in Madrid on January 7, 1807.

In this magnificent portrait of the Duke of Osuna, you can see the duality in Ducker´s way of working. On the one hand, he used a fine and tight color point with which it gives volume to the face and, on the other, he released the brushstroke on the clothing and in the background but without forgetting the detail in the representation of the insignia of the order of Carlos III that the duke wears in the left buttonhole of the coat. He used a reduced color gamut, characteristic of his portraits of men; he usually resorted to shades of brown, blue and white.
