Portrait of Don Diego de Arce y Reinoso

Ca. 1665. Oil on canvas.
Not on display

This portrait represents the inquisitor bishop Don Diego de Arce y Reinoso (Zalamea de la Serena (Badajoz),1585–Madrid, 1665). He was appointed bishop of Tuy (1636–1638), of Avila (1638–1639) and of Plasencia (1639–1643) consecutively. In 1643 he was named General Inquisitor, exercising the position until his death. In 1648 he became Councilor of Castile.

The main source of information on the character is the 1695 biography of Juan Manuel Giraldo, "Vita y heroicos del Excelentísimo y Venerable Señor Don Diego de Arce Reynoso, Obispo de Tuy, deAvila y Plasenia, Inquisidor General y del Consejo de Estado". The work includes a print with the image of the inquisitor, which depicts him in the same position as in the painting.
