Rock crystal cup of hexagonal form

1662 - 1675. Rock crystal / Hyaline quartz, Enamel, Gold, Silver gilt, Ruby. Room 079B

A tall cup made up of four pieces of rock crystal and four silver gilt and enamelled gold mounts. The bowl, carved in six facets decorated with sprays framed within bands, rests upon a base with concave gadroons. The knop has six facets with engraved ovals, as does the stem, with rings whose size decreases towards the hexagonal gadrooned foot. Three ring mounts hold the bowl, knop and stem to the foot, which is embellished with a broad strip of silver gilt covered with gold overlays in the form of enamelled bouquets, and with a square cut ruby in the centre of each plane. The enamelled overlays are similar to those of vessel O54 of the Dauphin’s Treasure, also made in Augsburg. These works are attributed to Johann Daniel Mayer (active 1662-1675), a silversmith who was active in that city, like others preserved in the collection of Louis XIV and other collections.

The cover is missing. It had a broad mount on the edge, similar to that on the foot, and another as a finial, which correspond to a gap of seven centimetres in the case. Seventeen rubies were encrusted on these two missing mounts. The cover, carved in facets, had twelve rubies and ended in four crystal leaves and six grains of the same material forming a pyramid with five inset rubies. The case records the full volume of the vessel and has a specific compartment for the cover.

Original state: Juan Laurent y Minier, “Coupe, en cristal de roche taillé et gravé, montures d’argent doré avec appliques d’or et pierreries, XVIIe siècle, règne de Louis XIII”, c. 1879. Museo del Prado, HF0835/38 (L. Arbeteta, in press).
