Saint Dominic Comforting the Pilgrims
Ca. 1665. Wash, Pencil, Grey-brown ink on paper. Not on display
This is one of a set of preparatory drawings for a series of canvases on the life of Saint Dominic that were painted for the Dominican convent of la Santa Cruz in Granada. None of the paintings has survived, and of the surviving drawings, some are copies of the original compositions by Cano that were then painted by his followers. In this sense, it is difficult to correctly attribute the drawings, and there is some divergence among authors in that respect. The Museo del Prado has six drawings from this group, and three more are at the Biblioteca Nacional. The rest are in various public collections abroad.
