Saint Dominic de la Calzada
Second half of the XVII century. Pencil, Blue wash, Pencil ground on laid paper. Not on display
In the foreground of the composition, there is a tomb from which a man in chains rises. The event terrifies a female figure. In front of the tomb are a rooster, two hens and a dog. In the background there is the architectural structure of a church, of which we can see the upper façade and bell gable. The figure of Saint Dominic appears in the celestial plane with an abbot’s habit and a staff on a throne of clouds.
The subject appears to refer to the legend of Saint Dominic de la Calzada, a Benedictine abbot. He performed the miracle of resurrecting a young man unjustly executed in front of his parents and bringing a roasted rooster and hen back to life.
The drawing is a Madrid school work by the circle of Claudio Coello or Jiménez Donoso, quite characteristic for its technique and its treatment of the architecture, which is quite classical.
