Saint Francis of Assisi

Second half of the XVII century. Oil on canvas.
On display elsewhere

The portrait depicts Saint Francis of Assisi dressed in the typical Franciscan sackcloth fastened with a rustic cord with the three knots. Each of the knots represents the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He holds a crucifix in his hand and the wounds on his own body are clearly visible. On this occasion, the depiction of the saint does not attempt to come close to the description given by his biographer Thomas of Celano. He describes Francis of Assisi as a puny-looking short figure with sickly eyes and a scraggly beard. The depiction of the figure shares the sculptural magnificence characteristic of Coello´s creations. The gentle approach to the habit, consisting of bulky and heavy folds, allows Coello to convey his own idea of volume and space. It also reveals his preference for placing the figures on steps or benches to give them a sense of greater dignity and poise and to fully exploit the effects of perspective. The similarity of the dimensions of "Saint Francis of Assisi" and "Saint Anthony of Padua2 (P5244) and the contrasting attitudes of the sitters suggest that both paintings were paired in a collection of paintings that formed the side streets of what could be an altarpiece of a Franciscan convent. The biography of these saints may suggest that a Marian sculpture presided over the central box of the aforementioned altarpiece.
