Saint Hippolyte curing the Leg of the Oxherd Peter
1419 - 1421. Mixed method on panel.Room 051B
The scene forms part of the altarpiece dedicated to Saint Lawrence, Saint Hippolytus and Saint Thomas Aquinas that was commissioned by the canon Ferrer Despujol for the Chapel of Saint Lawrence in Barcelona Cathedral. Its artist was Lluís Borrassà, a very successful painter in early 15th-century Barcelona who distinguished himself not only through his narrative technique and chromatic sensibility but also thanks to his ability to surround himself with skilful collaborators. With them, he organised a large workshop that produced works - especially large altarpieces - for all kinds of clients, from kings and burghers to convents and parishes. It is a characteristic work of the final stage of the painter’s activity, with a special emphasis on narrative and the figures are in modern dress, typical of international Gothic.
