Saint Martha, Saint Dominic and Saint Peter Martyr

1414 - 1421. Tempera on panel.
Room 051B

This is the central painting from the altarpiece that was in the chapel of Santa Martha in Barcelona cathedral, commissioned by Guillem Despujol, a wealthy apothecary and devout follower of the Dominicans. The altarpiece was executed by Lluís Borrassà, the city’s most celebrated artist, with the assistance of some members of his studio, which notably included Pere Sarreal and the slave Lluc Borrassà. Depicted as painted sculptures in niches, the hieratic figures of the three saints form a contrast with the colourful architectural structures decorated with varied figurative motifs.
