Saint Luke

Ca. 1778. Oil on canvas

This is a sketch for one of the frescoes on the gospel side of the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. Painted in 1778-1779, those frescoes of Saint Luke Painting the Virgin present the saint at the center of the composition, with his still-unfinished painting of the Virgin and Child on an easel at his right. That is the normal iconography for Saint Luke. On his left, three angels display a banner with the Bible text from Luke I, 28. With one hand, the saint points upwards to his words while, with the other, he points down, possibly to draw our attention to the bull that is one of his symbols. In the composition he is accompanied by numerous angels in different postures. Francisco Bayeu also painted other parts of the chapel, including the dome, where he developed the subjects of The Glory of the Lamb of God over the main altarpiece, Allegory of the Church in front of the main altarpiece, and Faith with the Tablets of the Ten Commandments across from it. For the epistle wall he painted the Prophet Isaiah. The related drawings and preparatory sketches are at the Museo del Prado, and particular mention should be made of three drawings: Saint Luke (D02128), which is the study for the composition´s main figure; Robes (D00340), which is a study for his robes in the lower part, and Servant Angel (D00398), which is a preparatory drawing for the angel who points to the Saint from below.
