Saint Michael the Archangel
1475 - 1485. Mixed method on panel.Room 051A
This is the left panel of the Altar Piece of the Pietà, Saint Michael and Saint Catherine from the church of Santa María in Ejea de los Caballeros (Zaragoza). The painter, originally from Pareja (Guadalajara) and active in Aragon, shows the archangel dressed in armour and a cloak, driving his lance into the head of the demon beneath his feet.
Wearing armour and a cloak, the archangel thrusts his spear into a fantastic and at the same time ridiculous dragon. This iconographic formula was reproduced repeatedly. Owing to his great fame as the guardian of Earth and saviour of souls, Saint Michael became the patron saint of communities and personalities from every walk of life, and so one of the celestial figures most frequently represented in Spanish Gothic painting.
