St Gregory’s Mass
XVII century. Oil on canvas. Not on display
While the holy Pope celebrates mass in the Basilica of Santa Cruz in Jerusalem, one of the acolytes doubts the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and at the same moment, Christ descends upon the altar, naked, crowned with thorns, showing his wounds, supported by two angels and surrounded by the attributes of the Passion. The canvas – which was attributed to Francisco Ribalta when it first appeared in a public sale in New York (1916) – was already recognised as an early work of the artist by Pérez Sánchez.
