Studies of Jesuit cardinals
XVII century. Black chalk on yellow paper. Not on display
The two figures on the right of the composition are depicted wrapped in broad cloaks, next to buffets or tables. The figure on the left appears to be wearing military dress and rests his right leg on fallen figures or objects in a triumphal gesture.
They were reproduced by Sánchez Cantón, who corroborated the text on the drawing and considered them to be ‘a faithful summary of the drawing’s moving outlines with plenty of lively and vibrant effects’. The paintings of Jesuit cardinals for which these drawings were sketched perished in the fire of 1936 without having been photographed.
