The Adoration of the Shepherds

1678. Oil on canvas.
On display elsewhere

The painter seems to have used some Italianate print, typical of late Mannerism, thus resulting in a somewhat old-fashioned composition given the date it was painted. The work is also an example of the colour scheme often employed by the artist, who always used a very sober palette of muted, greyish tones, very different from that favoured by his contemporaries in Madrid, which was always lively and vibrant, in contrast to Van de Pere´s dominant greyish, leaden tones. On this occasion, the artist returned to his usual way of depicting people, thin, with small round heads and tousled hair, triangular and pointed profiles and dressed in fabrics with very noticeable folds. Lastly, a spindle-shaped sensation can be perceived in their bodies.

This is, on the whole, a superficial work, inclined toward the decorative or the superficially iconographic rather than the creative. Its original provenance is unknown. Nevertheless, as it was part of the collections of Museo de la Trinidad, and was undoubtedly painted for a convent in Madrid.
