The beating

Ca. 1835. Oil on canvas.
Not on display

This drawing depicts a mother who is violently beating a small child with a slipper. The clothes are lying near a wall that covers most of the background. An inscription on the back states that Isidoro Llanos commissioned the painting. He was an architect and friend of the artist. ´If he broke the pitcher´ is the ´Capriche 25´ of Goya (G00662 and G02113), which Alenza follows very closely in his ´Lashing´. However, in this case, its execution and palette are not exactly Goyaesque. In any case, for both Goya and Alenza, it was merely a reproach for the ease with which children were punished for any mishap or blunder.
