The Holy Family or Trinity on Earth

XVII century. Oil on canvas Not on display

The Christ Child looks out at the viewer. The halo behind his head is a cross-shaped prefiguration of his Passion, while the Virgin´s consists of twelve stars that allude to her sorrows. Saint Joseph holds his flowering rod. The dove of the Holy Ghost hovers above them, and further up, the figure of God the Father is accompanied by various angels and cherubs, thus completing the heavenly Trinity. A veritable wonder of technical skill, this painting uses the canvas´s red priming to obtain a luminous and glowing background, barely suggested by whitish touches, from which the upper figures emerge, while the three protagonists stand out against it. This is a fine example of the artist´s skill and speed at painting. The figures´ canon is customary in his production, and their clearly mannerist proportions suggest a certain instability. The models for the woman and angels are also customary in his work. And all of this, as well as the palette of muted, dirty tones make this a characteristic work by Camilo, with its customary tender and sweet sentimentalism.
