Venice captivated the Valencian painter Muñoz Degrain from the time he discovered it as a grant student in Italy, inspiring fantastical scenes such as this one. Particularly striking for its effects of moonlight, it dramatically reflects the artist’s subjective vision of the city. Muñoz Degrain’s inclination towards the enigmatic and literary led him to introduce elements such as the lone woman in the gondola, which appeal to the viewer’s imagination.
