The Nativity
1519. Oil on panelThe Renaissance-style architecture, the original approach to composition and even the range of colours favoured by this enigmatic and highly-individual painter recall Central European art, and particularly the work of Michael Pacher. The monumental figures are rendered with a degree of artifice -evident in the complex folds of their robes- and are too large for the architecture which frames them. The panel is from the main altarpiece of the royal pantheon at the monastery of Sigena (Huesca).
