The Virgin and Child
XVIII century. Yellow wash, Pencil on yellow laid paper. Not on display
This is a representation of the Virgin of more than half-length. She is seated, seen from left profile, and gazing at the Infant Christ. She wraps him in a swaddling cloth while he raises his arms and looks up at the sky. This figure demonstrates, at a relatively early date in Calleja’s oeuvre, the survival of the models of 17th-century painting in Madrid, the style in which he was trained during his youth.
