The Virgin
1769. Black chalk, White chalk on green paper. Not on display
This drawing depicts a female figure leaning towards the left, with a mantle over her head and her left arm outstretched. The study of the clothing is very thorough. The canvas was engraved (G000317 and G001564) by Fernando Selma in 1808 (Catalogue of the Calcografía Nacional. Madrid, 1968, núm. 28, fig. 2). This is a preparatory drawing for the central figure of Birth in the church of San Pascual in Aranjuez. It was painted in 1769 alongside its accompanying pieces (Annunciation, Ascension and Pentecost), which are no longer extant.
