Two figures
1769. White chalk, Black chalk on green paper. Not on display
This drawing is a study of two figures. To the left is a standing female figure, facing forwards with an imploring pose and with her head turned to the left. The study of the mantle, which covers her head and half of her body, is very thorough. However, the rest of the figure and the mantle are only sketched out provisionally. This female figure is a preparatory drawing for the corresponding one in the midground to the right of the oil sketch of the Ascension (P002490) for the church of the convent of San Pascual in Aranjuez. It was painted in 1769 alongside its accompanying pieces (Annunciation, Birth and Pentecost), which are no longer extant. To the right is a standing male figure, with his back turned and wearing a mantle. The head is only sketched out provisionally. However, the mantle is almost completed. This male figure could be a preparatory drawing for an unknown figure in the final version of the canvas.
