Two apostles
1769. Black chalk, White chalk on green paper. Not on display
This is a study of two male figures. On the left, a kneeling figure is depicted in profile towards the left, wrapped in a large mantle. On the right, a figure facing forwards is depicted bowing his head and wearing a mantle. The study of the clothing on both figures is very thorough. This is a preparatory drawing for the corresponding figures in Pentecost in the church of San Pascual in Aranjuez. It was painted in 1769 alongside its accompanying pieces (Annunciation, Birth, and Ascension), which are no longer extant. It corresponds, with slight variations, to a sketch owned by a private collection in Madrid.
