Shepherdess
1769. White chalk, Black chalk on green paper. Not on display
This drawing depicts a female figure standing and facing forwards with her left arm raised. The study of the tunic is very thorough, whereas the figure’s body is only provisionally sketched. This is a preparatory drawing for the corresponding figure in Birth in the church of the convent of San Pascual in Aranjuez. It was painted in 1769 alongside its accompanying pieces (Annunciation, Ascension, and Pentecost), which are no longer extant. The canvas was engraved (G000317 and G001564) by Fernando Selma in 1808.
