The Virgin
1769. White chalk, Black chalk on grey paper. Not on display
This drawing depicts a seated female figure facing forwards with her hands in prayer. This is a preparatory drawing for the corresponding figure of a Pentecostal canvas. It has been frequently identified as one of the drawings for the compositions decorating the cloister of the convent of San Pascual in Aranjuez (Annunciation, Birth, Ascension and Pentecost) that were executed by Francisco Bayeu in 1769 and that are no longer extant.
