The Virgin
1787. White chalk, Pencil on blue paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing for the main figure of the painting The Virgin with Saint Francis and Saint Anthony in the church of Santa Ana in Valladolid. It was probably painted in 1787, at the same time Goya was painting the accompanying canvases. The Virgin is depicted facing forwards, kneeling on a cloud. She is wrapped in a broad mantle covering her head, with her hands crossed over her chest.
