Under the awning
1892. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
At the 1892 International Exhibition held in Madrid, Bermudo was awarded the third-place medal for this work. It depicts the deck of a ship, popular known as a pleasure ship, where an awning protects the passengers from the sun´s rays. Two women are sitting in the foreground. There is a child standing on the knees of one of the women, while the other is looking with her binoculars towards the sea, where the next port at which the ship will disembark can be seen. In addition, some boats are sailing, and a calm swell can be perceived. On the deck a sailor cleaning the floor and other passengers can be seen. As for the colouring, the pastel colours used for the clothes of the figures and in the flesh tones of the women in the foreground stand out.
