Young Angel
1779. White chalk, Black chalk on green paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing for the figure of the young angel in the upper-central part of the fresco The Transfer of the Remains of Saint Eugene in the cloister of Toledo Cathedral. Three preparatory sketches for the fresco are extant: one in Toledo Cathedral, another in the Ena Collection in Zaragoza and a third in a private collection in Madrid. The Museo del Prado keeps several related drawings.
The figure is depicted facing forwards, in a flying pose with his arms outstretched. The study of the clothing is very thorough. However, the figure is barely sketched. The Museo del Prado keeps another drawing for the same figure (D000520), in which there is a detailed study of the two arms and the right knee.
