Adela Ginés y Ortiz

Madrid (Spain), 13.08.1846 - San Agustín de Guadalix (Madrid, Spain), 1918

She was a Spanish painter and sculptor, a student of Carlos de Haes and Sebastián Gessa, who specialized in landscape and still-life, particularly floral arrangements. Born into a wealthy family of La Mancha cattle ranchers, she was closely connected to the aristocracy and even the Royal Family. She studied at the Special School of Fine Arts, and after the death of her parents, she was compelled to work as a private teacher as well as for the Association for the Education of Women.

She made her debut at the age of thirty-four at the National Exhibition of 1881 and subsequently participated regularly in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Spain. She received an honorary mention in 1887 and 1895 in painting, in 1892 in sculpture, and third-class medals in sculpture in 1895 and 1899. She also received a third-class medal in painting in 1897 for the oil painting "Un presidio suelto" (P6939) and again in 1901 for the painting "Casa de vecindad" (P5825), a distinction she repeated in 1912. Additionally, she earned an honorary mention at the 1899 Exposition Universelle in Paris (Text extracted from: E.M.N.P., Vol. IV, 2006, p. 1160; Diego, Estrella de, *La mujer y la pintura del siglo XIX español: cuatrocientas olvidadas y alguna más*, Madrid, Cátedra, 1987, p. 276; Cuaderno de Sofonisba [Cuaderno de Sofonisba]
