Until July 30, the Prado Museum presents a selection of 69 drawings - out of the 192 that have been donated to the institution by the Fundación Tatiana - in Room D of the Jerónimos building. They offer a complete overview of the artist's facet as a draftsman, from the earliest examples, that show the results of his training period in Seville and his first trips around Spain as an outdoor painter, to the latest ones, in which he manages to create true pictorial effects on paper. The three paintings and the drawing of the artist that the Prado already had in its collection are shown together with them.
The importance of the drawings that make up this exhibition, dated within a broad chronological framework of the painter's life, and whose graphic work was practically absent from the Prado's collections, allow us to retrace the complete career as a draftsman of Emilio Sánchez Perrier, a follower of the postulates of naturalistic landscape painting developed by the Escuela de Barbizón and of the luminous and detailed painting of artists such as Martín Rico and Mariano Fortuny.
Emilio Sánchez Perrier (1855-1907) was one of the most outstanding Spanish landscape painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He developed his professional activity between his native Seville and Paris and his paintings were especially appreciated for their realism, luminosity and technical precision.
The drawings gathered in this exhibition, curated by Gloria Solache, Technician of the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Museo Nacional del Prado, were made by the artist during his travels through Spain, France, Italy and North Africa, and depict natural, rural and urban scenes. In them we can distinguish defining features of his style: the perfect identification of the elements of nature, architecture, figures and objects represented; the use of compositional patterns with deep perspectives, or his special ability to capture the lighting effects of the different times of day and seasons of the year.
Fundación Tatiana and Museo del Prado
The collaboration between the Fundación Tatiana and the Museo Nacional del Prado dates back to 2019, the year in which the Foundation acquired a collection of one hundred and ninety-two drawings by Sánchez Perrier that were on the market to donate them to the Museum in an excellent example of patronage. This collaboration was endorsed shortly thereafter with the signing of an agreement in which, in addition to the dissemination and exhibition of the collection of drawings, it was agreed to study, restore and exhibit at the Prado the two sketches by Goya for the Preaching of Saint Bernardine of Siena, owned by the Foundation.
This exhibition will be presented in the fall of 2023 at the Cáceres headquarters of the Tatiana Foundation, in the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo.
