Goya’s brushwork in the sketch "The San Isidro Meadow" (1788)
Located between the hermitage of San Isidro and the Manzanares River, with the view of Madrid in the background, where the Royal Palace and the great dome of the church of San Francisco el Grande can be recognised.
This is the preparatory sketch for the principal scene in the set of tapestries intended to decorate the bedroom of the Infantas, the daughters of the future Charles IV and María Luisa of Parma, in the Palacio de El Pardo in Madrid. The death of Charles III in December 1788 interrupted this project, as his successor, Charles IV, favoured other Royal Sites. Goya never went on to paint the final work.
