The Museo del Prado’s frame collection is closely linked to the history of the works framed; not just paintings from the Royal Collection – on which the Museum was founded – but also pictures subsequently donated, bequeathed and acquired. The result is an extensive collection of frames varying greatly in both style and artistic technique.

The collection comprises around 8,000 frames which may be regarded as works of art in themselves, spanning the history of art from the 13th to the 21th century.
