Two Visitations: Pontormo and Raphael at the Prado
Live video on "The Visitation", an episode recounting the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, both pregnant, as recorded in the Gospel of Saint Luke. It was depicted in painting, among many others, by Raphael Sanzio and his assistant Giulio Romano between 1517 and 1519, and some ten years later by Pontormo, who based his work on a print by Dürer.
Pontormo’s "The Visitation" is an exceptional loan from the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo in Carmignano (Prato), in the Diocese of Pistoia. It can be seen until 18 June at the Prado Museum as part of the “The Invited Work” programme, thanks to the collaboration of the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado.
