The Minister of Culture, César Antonio Molina, today chaired the special session of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Museo del Prado in which it was unanimously agreed to appoint Plácido Arango as President of the Board, replacing the recently deceased Rodrigo Uría. A high-profile businessman in both Spain and Mexico, Arango is closely associated with the world of art and has been a Member of the Board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since 1991. Mr Arango owns one of the most important private collections of art world-wide which includes works by leading names in the history of art such as Goya, El Greco, Ribera, Sorolla, Henry Moore, Chillida and Tàpies. In addition to his activities as a collector he is a significant art patron. Among other donations, in 1992 he gave the Museo del Prado a copy of the First Edition of Goya’s Caprichos.

Biographical details:

Plácido Arango (born Tampico, Mexico, 1931) graduated in Economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in 1966. In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate. As a businessman he is a founding partner of Grupo Cifra in Mexico and a founder of Grupo Sigla in Spain. He has been president of the Fundación Príncipe de Asturias (1987-1996), a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Museo del Prado (1980-1993), and of the Board of Trustees of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (1988-1991). He is on the Boards of the Biblioteca Nacional and the Fundación Federico García Lorca and is a founding Board Member of the Executive Committee of the Fundación de Ayuda contra la Drogadicción, a corresponding Member for Mexico of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Tufts University, Boston. An Honorary Citizen of the Principality of Asturias, Plácido Arango has been awarded numerous honours and distinctions, including the Gran Cruz de Isabel la Católica, the Gran Cruz del Mérito Civil, the Gold Medal for Fine Arts, the Juan Lladó Prize for Sponsorship, the Gold Medal of the Spanish Institute in New York, and the Círculo Ecuestre Prize in Barcelona.
