Allegorical figure
1788. White chalk, Pencil on yellow paper. Not on display
This is a preparatory drawing, probably for Good Governance, prudent with a rudder and the horn of plenty, for the fresco Spanish Monarchy as Protector of the Fine Arts, located in the Casita del Príncipe (Cottage of the Prince) in the Royal Palace of El Pardo. A two-faced female figure is depicted in the central part of the composition. In the background to the right is a tree, and in the upper left part are child angels in a flying pose, one of whom carries a compass. The artist may have used this reduction as a basis from which to develop an easel painting, but there is no evidence of this.
