Apparition of the Virgin of Good Counsel to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga
XVII century. Wash, Pencil, Pencil ground on yellow paper. Not on display
The upper register of the drawing is cut out in the form of a mixtilinear arch. It presents a certain degree of restoration.
To the right, a full-length image of the Virgin with the Christ Child in her arms is depicted on an altar. In front of her, a knight with his sword strapped around his waist kneels with his arms spread in a gesture of devotion. In the upper part of the composition, a group of cherubim pull aside a curtain. The architectural background is of a classicist style.
The attribution to Claudio Coello documented in the Prado inventories, acknowledged by Mayer, does not seem plausible given the numerous differences with other drawings of a similar nature by this artist. The technical similarities with the work of Herrera Barnuevo are even greater, especially in the depiction of the angels holding the curtain. This is directly inspired by Cano and executed with a very personal drawing style, just as in the figure of the Virgin.
