Cooling Vessel

1570 - 1575. Ceramic paste. Room 056B

This cooling vessel was originally used to keep drinks or fruit at an appropriated temperature, although it was later used in the Royal Apothecary of San Lorenzo to store pharmacy tools in water. It may have belonged to the set of dishes which the Duke of Urbino, Guidobaldo II sent as a gift to Felipe II. Its outer decoration follows the fantastic models of Mannerism, both in its plastic forms -fauns holding a goblet- and in its grotesques. The scene of naval combat on the inside is inspired by a drawing of Taddeo Zuccaro.
