This canvas can be identified as a preparatory study for the head of the last male figure on the right-hand side of Flevit super illam, which the artist covered with a red scarf in the final painting. As in his study for Jesus’ head (P008453), Simonet paid particularly close attention to the details of its unique lighting, which lent the finished work a supernatural appearance.
