Frame of The Painter Francisco de Goya
Ca. 1826. Moulded, Water gilding, Joined / assembled.Room 062A
This First Empire frame – the term denotes a style popular when Napoleon Bonaparte ruled as emperor (1804-15) – was designed by architects Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pierre Fontaine (1762-1853). It reflects a renewed interest in classical antiquity, from which it borrows trademark elements such as palmettes, lotus flowers and plant scrolls. The bee, another motif, was Napoleon’s personal symbol.
