James I, the Conqueror (copy)
Ca. 1878. Oil on canvas. On display elsewhere
According to the documentation of the Iconography Board, this portrait is a copy of the mural painting that was kept in the convent of La Puridad in Valencia. Juan de Juanes made an engraving printed on a drawing of the portrait, which probably served as a reference for the copy.
The portrait depicts James of Aragon and Montpellier, son of King Peter II of Aragon, Count of Barcelona. He was born on 2 February 1208 in Montpellier (France) in the barony of the same name that his mother, Dona Maria de Montpellier y Comnema, owned. He conquered three kingdoms: Majorca (1229), Valencia (1241) and Murcia (1266).
