Neapolitan Landscape
1874. Oil on canvas Room 063Visible behind the foreground rocks which attract the viewer’s attention are the bay of Naples in the distance and, closer at hand, the cluster of houses of the neighbouring town of Portici with the distinctive architecture of the Royal Palace built by Charles III and María Amalia of Saxony when they ruled the kingdom of Naples. These geographical features, depicted singly or as part of the landscape, had attracted the painter’s interest since the start of his artistic career.
