Pietà
Ca. 1756. Oil on canvas. Not on display
A Pietà made by this Neapolitan painter during his stay in Madrid (1753-1763). The group of Christ and the angel holding him corresponds to the fresco of the Holy Trinity in the chapel at Madrid’s Royal Palace, of which the Museo del Prado has a presentation sketch (P03204). A preparatory drawing of the figure of Christ is at the Museo di San Martino in Naples. Giaquinto had already used this compositional scheme in the fresco for the dome of The Holy Trinity at San Giovanni Calibita in Rome, which dates from around 1740. Smaller replicas of this composition, which Giaquinto himself painted on canvas, are at the Pinacoteca de Montefortino and the Institute of art of Minneapolis. This composition was also used by disciples of Giaquinto in Spain. For example, it appears in drawing by José del Castillo in the Museo del Prado (D0676 and D0677).
